The X-event is a global, beta-limiting instability occurring in VH-mode plasmas whereupon they revert to Elming H-mode. While a peeling mode may be important
at lower beta, at high beta_N the n=1 mode is seen to be correlated with the rapid energy loss [Strait, EPS, 1993]. There is evidence from the 1993 campaign on plasma shape that in the high beta_N plasma the collapse is initiated in the core, with an expulsion of core pressure, raising p’ in the outer region, thus generating an edge instability. A lack of central Thomson precluded a conclusion on the veracity of this scenario. ECE and central reflectometry being unsuitable in high beta, H-mode plasmas, central Thomsom is a critical diagnostic. The general conditions suggest the initiating instability might be an infernal mode.
